During our weekly sessions in the garden, we encounter many different bugs, both harmful as well as beneficial ones. We designate as "bugs" insects as well as arachnids and other creepy-crawlies. In our weekly garden reports we note bugs that were found in the garden, and include a photo. We include descriptions of the damage caused by harmful bugs as well as methods of controlling them. A special emphasis is put on pointing out the many beneficial bugs that frequent the garden. When identifying bugs we find, we usually verify with two or three college resources and/or Garden Insects of North America by Whitney Cranshaw. If we are still uncertain, we consult with HGIC, and if all the above fail to bring a positive identification, we consult with Stanton Gill, our UM Regional Specialist Entomologist.
A Bug Booklet which identifies 27 bugs found in the Derwood Demonstration Garden is available for a donation of $8.00 and is available at the garden during the growing season.
All bug photos posted on our website are taken here, usually during the current year, but occasionally pulled from past years should the need arise. All bug photos in this section are copyrighted but may be used for educational purposes only and not for resale.
